About the different prices you see below: you will see a $5 game & a $6 game- this type of game has no referees but there is a supervisor and uniforms provided- and between 50 and 54 minutes of playing time. You will also see a $9 or $10 game and those are actual league games with 2 referees and a league opponent. And once per month, you may see the $12 price option and this is for- what we call- the '$12 Tournament'- which is a '4-team round-robin tournament' where you will play three 32-minute games against three different teams (you get 96 minutes of playing time over two hours basically); the $12 tournament is not refereed (similar to the $5 or $6 type games where you have to be cooperative in nature). Restated about the $5 or $6 or $12 options- note that- zero referees means you have to be cooperative- so come to this ready to cooperate and have fun, these $5, $6 and $12 options are better than random pickup ball because you show up to an exact amount of players at an exact time, we provide uniforms and we provide a court supervisor who makes sure everyone substitutes equally- but yes with the $5, $6 and $12 priced games, those are 'cooperative' zero refereed games.
Why was the ‘Pick to Play’ program created by PortlandBasketball.com? Pick to Play was created so that players who only have themselves or one or two buddies- can still play in our league; in fact, you can play up to 7 days per week! Pick to Play was created -also- so that league players going 1 time per week could jump in a 2nd run per week. And Pick-to-Play was created because owner Mikal Duilio now has 4 children and he had to find odd pockets of time to play (day time, Saturdays); Mikal Duilio could only play night ball 2 nights maximum per week but Duilio wanted a 3rd and 4th basketball option but needed an option that did not interfere with family life (daytime & Saturdays).
How does Pick to Play work? Find a time that works for you from the below 7 days worth of options (first, register your name and pay for your first game), submit your name- and show up ready to play. Remember to sub equally- all players should have the same amount of playing time.
How do you pay? Payment is by credit card or debit card only; in fact - if you are new- log on to the main page of portlandbasketball.com and hit the button that says 'submit payment' and pay for your first game; when it asks what team this is for, simply say Pick to Play. Once you have your payment information submitted, you are set to register for any game, any time you want (and you do not have to pay each time, rather, whatever you signed up for gets deducted from your credit/debit card every game night). Your credit/debit card numbers are secure as we use a service called Authorize.net (for more information on how secure your payment is, we can email you a link to a video we made explaining this). Note that once you are committed to a game, you will be charged unless you email to cancel the night before (by midnight).
Why should you play ‘Pick to Play? ’you do not have to organize and collect from seven players to get your game on… if you by yourself- or you and a buddy want in, sign up- & show up, same day even. This is also an opportunity for players who have been out of the game for a while- to get back in shape with as many games per week as you prefer.
What is the quality of the games? the actual basketball court, uniforms and the playing time are all A grade. We 'jump ball' each game, we have uniforms per game so the game is solid (even the games without referees- are solid). Of course Pick-to-Play may not be as good as playing with your own real team- but it is a decent run and typically a great cardio workout. A good description of the quality of the games is described in the above video (far right) but since this video has been made, the quality has gone up especially on Fridays and Saturdays- I would say the Sunday-Thursday games are described as good probably 70% of the time, while Fridays/Saturdays are in the 90% range. Pick to Play is a program in its third year and we finally are figuring out how to make these games good-- come check it out, see you on the court.
